Entries are now open for FTA’s Transport Manager of the Year competition sponsored by Brigade Electronics, a brand-new contest to enable transport managers to showcase their extensive knowledge and gain recognition from other industry professionals. The competition is open to both members and non-members of FTA and will see participants undertake a series of role-relevant challenges in order to test their knowledge and skills against their peers.

To enter the competition, applicants must hold a valid Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage (National or International) or equivalent (in accordance with paragraphs 8 to 13 of Schedule 3 The Goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Act 1995). Candidates must also be either currently named as an internal transport manager on a standard national or international goods operator licence or employed by a restricted operator licence holder to conduct a role equivalent to transport manager. Consultant or external transport managers are not eligible to enter. Entries will close on 19 March and the 50 finalists, selected by a small board from all entries received, will take part in a day of competition at the UK head office of event supporters DAF Trucks in Haddenham on 24 April.

All participants will then be hosted at a ceremony and lunch on 6 May where the competition’s winners will be announced, including the overall FTA Transport Manager of the Year. FTA’s Young Transport Manager of the Year will also be named at the event, acknowledging the brightest rising stars within the logistics sector.

FTA’s Director of Policy, Elizabeth de Jong commented, “A successful transport manager needs a multitude of skills and a wealth of industry knowledge. It is a responsible, challenging but rewarding role, and the very best transport managers must be competent at vehicle maintenance, driver management, possess complete knowledge of compliance requirements and ensure that their own CPD is maintained to the highest standard – all whilst delivering for their customers, the key priority for all logistics businesses. This new competition is a great way to acknowledge the invaluable contribution transport managers make to the work of UK plc and provides a fantastic opportunity for the industry’s best to showcase their skill sets.”

Efficient logistics is vital to keep the UK trading, directly having an impact on more than seven million people employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. A champion and challenger, FTA speaks to government with one voice on behalf of the whole sector, with members from the road, rail, sea and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers.
